Driving Magic uses Team USA Harness with New Horse

Driving Magic, Inc. has had good fortune in the past year.  When Gary Grisham, the winner of the Team USA Camptown Harness raffle found out they were in need, he came to the rescue.  The harness was donated to the Georgia based driving center.  It was fitted for Monkey, a 15.2 hh Belgian/Quarter horse cross that pulls a Thornlea carriage.  Now the center can continue to assist it's students, including the pictured driver from Annandale Village, a residential village for adults with developmental disabilities. While they provide services for approximately 50 Villagers, this was a new student from Annandale; you can tell she is just loving it!  Thank you to Gary Grisham for donating his prize harness, the folks at Camptown Harness and Coblenz and Chupps Blacksmith Shop for fitting Monkey's harness, and USDFD for hosting the raffle.  For more information on Camptown visit www.horseharness.com and for information on Driving Magic, Inc, contact: Jennifer J. Lindskoog: Founder & Executive Director, Driving Magic, Inc., P.O. Box 279, Duluth, GA 30096, 404.358.4129 drivingmagicinc@aol.com

Mentorship Program

In 2005 at the USDFD Annual Board of Trustees meeting, the board voted to inaugurate a Mentorship Program.  Through this program, USDFD hopes to spread the joy of carriage driving far beyond our present reach.

Our driving world is a very small community. We pride ourselves in lending a hand to other drivers. We love for new people to join our driving clubs and get involved. USDFD would like to offer you an opportunity to get involved in a special driver’s life.

Almost weekly we are contacted by handicapped people from all over the United States, expressing the desire to learn about driving a horse. Maybe they have never seen a horse, maybe they have been a horse-person all their lives. Our mission is to help them fulfill that dream. We are inviting you to be a part of their aspirations.

Through the mentorship program, each USDFD driver will be set up with an “able-bodied” mentor. Beginning drivers would first visit our National USDFD headquarters where we assess their needs. We will establish what adaptations, if any, are needed along with safety equipment. We will start the driver with an able-bodied driver and discuss any physical restrictions with their care-giver. This ensures their safety and well-being. Then the driver returns home with there own equipment, to join up with their able-bodied mentor. If an already active USDFD driver wants to take part in the mentorship program, they will contact their USDFD regional representative or the National USDFD headquarters to be connected with a mentor. The mentor’s mission is to assist the driver in a safe, informative, and responsible way.

Ideally, the mentor partnership will allow the driver to continue their education locally. It will offer consistent driving opportunities in a dependable, safe environment.

Thank you for considering becoming a part of the USDFD mentorship program. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or know a disabled driver who would be interested in this program, please click on the link below, print and fill out the form, and send it into out National Office.  We look forward to working with you in the future!
